Heading to Washington, Prabowo Emphasizes Indonesia's Economic Sovereignty
JAKARTA - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has confirmed Indonesia's readiness to face economic negotiations with the United States ahead of his working visit to Washington DC.
Before departure, the President summoned a number of ministers in the field of economy to his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, to formulate a national strategy in facing negotiations with the United States government. The meeting focused on coordinating Indonesia's position so that every agreement reached is truly beneficial to national interests.
In his instructions, President Prabowo emphasized that every Indonesian bargaining position in negotiations must be oriented towards concrete and measurable benefits for the national economy. He asked that the cooperation built not only be short-term, but also be able to strengthen the foundation of domestic industries.
Indonesia is also paying attention to strengthening market access, increasing investment, and protection for strategic national sectors. The government wants to ensure that every form of economic cooperation maintains economic sovereignty and accelerates industrial transformation.
President Prabowo's visit to the United States is scheduled to include a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump as well as the signing of a reciprocal trade agreement (agreement on reciprocal trade/ART).
The government considers this negotiation as an important momentum to expand economic partnerships as well as strengthen Indonesia's position in the midst of global trade dynamics.
The President emphasized that the economic policies taken must have a direct impact on growth, job creation, and improving the competitiveness of national industries. The directive is the basis for the Indonesian negotiating team to move quickly, measured, and remain on the side of the nation's interests.
