Teacher Periodic Assessment is Urgent

JAKARTA - Education observer, Doni Kusuma, encourages the implementation of psychological assessment and mentoring as a preventive step for the recurrence of teacher behavior that tarnishes the face of Indonesian education.

This was launched by Doni after the case of a teacher who dared to strip dozens of students in Jember, East Java (Jatim).

The tragic incident occurred when the teacher with the initials F lost Rp200,000 on Thursday, February 5.

A day later, the money of Rp75,000 was gone again.

Emotions peaked, he searched the student's bag and forced 22 students to open all their clothes.

Some students only left underwear.

The action triggered the anger of the school principal who broke into the classroom.

The case has widened. The head of the Jember Regency Education Office, Arief Tjahjono, confirmed the incident and stated that steps had been taken.

The Jember Education Office has partnered with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) to provide trauma healing for students.

Psychological assistance is carried out so that the shame and fear that is left can slowly be restored.

According to Doni, prevention of similar cases by educators is not enough with sanctions after the incident.

Because, what needs to be corrected is not only the perpetrator, but also the supervisory system.

"The regional government and private managers provide psychological assistance and assessment, when there are teachers who have indications of mental problems. So the first screening is at the regional government and foundation," he said, Sunday, February 15.

He stated that periodic psychological tests for teachers should have been a long-standing policy. However, the realization was stuck on the issue of budget.

"I have long advocated that psychological tests be conducted periodically for teachers, so that they can get a good mental picture and pattern of support. The problem is that the cost of this test is expensive and the government does not provide it," added Doni.
