BWF will vote for the new 3 x 15 score system in April
JAKARTA - The International Badminton Federation (BWF) has officially approved a proposal regarding the new 3 × 15 evaluation system as the official match format to replace the current relay system.
The proposal for the system will be brought to the voting forum of members at the BWF Annual General Meeting on April 25, 2026 in Horsens, Denmark, in conjunction with the 2026 Thomas & Uber Cup competition. "We believe that the 3 × 15 evaluation system provides a strong foundation for the future of this sport," said BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul in an official statement from the international badminton parent. The decision is the result of a thorough evaluation process over several years, which includes statistical analysis, trials in official competitions, and discussions with key stakeholders throughout the badminton community.
Previously, in a meeting in early November 2025, the BWF Council concluded that the 3 × 15 system (with the 21st arrangement) was considered to be able to present the best balance between the attractiveness of the match, competitive fairness, player welfare, and the quality of the tournament presentation. This system has become part of the Alternative Laws of Badminton and has been tested in selected national and Grade 3 tournaments as well as at the 2025 BWF World Junior Championships.
"Our responsibility is to ensure that badminton continues to grow, inspire, and develop at every level," said Khunying. Based on the results of the BWF Research, the 3 x 15 format offers the advantage of more exciting and competitive matches, faster progress to critical points, and shorter and more predictable match durations. In addition, this system also reduces the physical burden of players, reduces the risk of injury, longer careers, and more energy and involvement per match. "This system supports the well-being of players, keeps the game dynamic and attractive for global audiences, and helps badminton stand out in the midst of an increasingly fast entertainment landscape," said Khunying.
