Ministry of PU Targets to Build Irrigation Area of 750,000 Ha in 2026
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) targets to build and rehabilitate irrigation networks to reach 750,000 hectares (ha) in 2026.
Last year, the PU Ministry successfully realized the construction and rehabilitation of an irrigation network covering 589,605.80 hectares (ha) by 2025.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo stated that irrigation infrastructure is now the government's top priority.
This strategic step plays a direct role in maintaining the stability of agricultural production while supporting the national food self-sufficiency target.
"All of these achievements are a manifestation of our commitment to ensuring that infrastructure supports food security, education, and regional economic growth," said Dody, quoted from a written statement, Friday, February 13.
In addition to spurring irrigation infrastructure, the PU Ministry also strengthens the vital artery of distribution connectivity through the implementation of Presidential Decree Number 11 of 2025 concerning the Handling of Regional Roads.
In 2025, the realization of regional road handling reached 711.02 kilometers (km) along with a bridge of 148.42 meters (m).
For 2026, with a proposed budget of Rp. 15 trillion, the Ministry of PU aims to increase roads along 2,191 km, the construction of 231 km of new roads and 589 m of bridges to reduce logistics costs and facilitate the distribution of agricultural products.
The PU Ministry also contributed to improving the quality of human resources through educational infrastructure.
Through Presidential Decree Number 7 of 2025, the government has completed the rehabilitation of 556 madrasah units out of a total of 1,420 units handled.
Meanwhile, through Presidential Decree Number 8 of 2025, as many as 166 units of pilot People's Schools (Phase I) have been completed, followed by 104 permanent units (Phase II) are still in process.
The focus of development is also directed to the eastern region of Indonesia through Presidential Decree Number 14 of 2025 regarding the acceleration of the Wanam Food Production Center Area (KSPP) in South Papua.
The achievements in 2025 in the region include the construction of roads and bridges along 20 km, flood control infrastructure 21 km and irrigation networks 20 km.
The development of basic infrastructure in Wanam is functional to support thousands of hectares of agricultural land. The project is part of the design to develop a food storage area towards the target of printing 10,000 ha of land in South Papua Province.
