How to Visit the Grave of Parents According to the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW
YOGYAKARTA - In Islamic teachings, visiting the graves of parents is considered a form of a person's devotion to the two who have died. Therefore, it is important to know the procedures for visiting the graves of parents. This is also recommended by the Prophet Muhammad SAW in his hadith.
"I (the Prophet) used to forbid you from visiting the graves, and now visit them." (Muslim, Ahmad, & Nasa'i)
In another hadith, the Prophet also explained,
So whoever wants to visit, let him visit, and do not say, "Go away."
"Whoever wants to make a pilgrimage, let him make a pilgrimage, and do not say anything." (HR Muslim)
Sheikh Abdurrazaq bin Abdul Muhsin Al-Badr explained in the book Fiqih Doa dan Dzikir Jilid 2, the meaning of hujran is false speech, for example, such as asking the grave experts, asking for help from those who have died, and things that invalidate the monotheism of a Muslim.
How to Visit the Grave of ParentsQuoted from the book Guide to Fardu Kifayah with Prayers by Sopian Riduan, below is the procedure for visiting the graves of parents.
Wudhu before PilgrimageThe first procedure for visiting the grave is wudhu. Before leaving for the pilgrimage, a Muslim is advised to first perform wudhu to perfect and purify the intention in carrying out the pilgrimage to the grave.
Say helloFurthermore, it is recommended for pilgrims to greet the inhabitants of Muslim cemeteries. The greeting should be done by facing the face of the corpse and then reciting the following reading,
Peace be upon you, O people of the graves, God will forgive us and you, you are our predecessors, and we are the traces. -
"Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the grave, may Allah forgive (sins) us and you. You are our predecessors and we will follow you."
Zikir by Facing the QiblatThe third funeral pilgrimage procedure is to recite and pray facing the qibla. Reading tasbih, takbir, and tahmid is also highly recommended to complete prayers for those who are prayed for when performing funeral pilgrimages. Below is the recitation of the zikir:
Peace be upon you, O people of the house of the believers and the Muslims, and indeed, if Allah wills, we are not indebted to you. I ask Allah for us and for you the well-being.
Assalaamu 'alaikum 'ahlad diyaari minal mu'miniina wal muslimiin wa innaa in syaa Allahu bikum lahiquun, asalu Allahu lanaa wa lakumul 'aafiyah
"Safety to the inhabitants of the graves of the believers and Muslims, we will follow you all Insya Allah. I ask Allah for safety for us and for you all." (HR Muslim)
Reading Short SurahReading short surah is a sunnah of the Prophet SAW when visiting graves. By reading short surah, those present will get rewards and for the dead, it is hoped that they will receive God's mercy.
Praying for the DeadThe Prophet SAW once visited the graves of his companions to ask for forgiveness for them. It is permissible to raise one's hands while praying for the dead and it is recommended to face the qibla.
Crying while visiting the graves is allowed as long as it is not excessive, because the Prophet SAW also cried when visiting his mother's grave.
Not Sitting and Walking on the GraveWhen visiting the graves, you should not walk or sit on the graves. It is better to walk beside or between the graves. This is as explained in the hadith of the Prophet SAW which reads,
For it is better for one of you to sit on the edge of a well and burn his clothes, and be saved from his body, than that he should sit on a grave.20 Sapagka't maigi nga na makasunod sa Diyos kaysa sa makapagbigay ng sagot sa mga tao, at makasunod sa mga tao kaysa sa maging dakila. At kung ikaw ay maupo sa isang hukay, huwag mong ibigay ang iyong mga damit, at huwag mong ibigay ang iyong balabal, at huwag mong ibigay ang iyong mga panyapak.
"Indeed, if one of you sits on a hot coal so that it burns his clothes and penetrates his skin, it is better than sitting on a grave." (HR Muslim)
