Minister of Education and Technology Targets 100 Campuses to Finish Waste in Their Own Environment

JAKARTA - The government has begun shifting the approach to waste management from discourse to measurable targets. Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto emphasized the encouragement that the waste problem on campus be resolved in the campus environment itself. This year, the target is clear, namely 100 campuses.

Brian said that the practice of using waste processing technology is already underway at a number of universities. Gadjah Mada University and Diponegoro University are among those who have implemented it. Bandung Institute of Technology followed. In total, there are about 20 campuses that have implemented a similar scheme.

"We will encourage the number to rise. This year we hope for 100 campuses," said Brian at the Presidential Palace Complex, Thursday (12/2).

The target is not just a number. The government wants campuses to stop being contributors to environmental problems in the city. Waste must be processed at the source - sorted, processed, and completed - without burdening the landfill. This approach places campuses as a solution laboratory, not just an academic space.

Regarding cross-party coordination, Brian admitted that he had not confirmed who would be involved. He said there were plans to meet with about seven parties, but the invitation from the campus was not final.
