List of the Most Popular Car Brands January 2026: BYD Displaces Honda, Jaecoo Makes a Surprise

JAKARTA - The map of competition in the national automotive industry in early 2026 is beginning to show changes. Chinese brand BYD is getting closer to dominating Japanese manufacturers in the list of best-selling car brands in Indonesia.

Overall, the performance of national car sales in January 2026 experienced a correction. Based on sales data, the distribution figure from manufacturers to dealers (wholesales) and sales to consumers (retail) fell significantly compared to December 2025.

Viewed from Gaikindo data, Thursday, February 12, in the last month of 2025 sales were still in the range of 90 thousand units. In January 2026, it was recorded that only 66,447 units were wholesales and 66,936 units were retail, or down about 27 percent.

However, compared to the same period last year, wholesales in January 2026 managed to increase by 7 percent from 62,084 units in the first month of last year. Meanwhile, retail sales increased by 4.5 percent compared to January 2025 with 64,076 units.

In the midst of this condition, Toyota is still able to maintain its position as the market leader. Toyota recorded wholesales of 20,078 units, while retail sales reached 22,066 units.

The second position is still occupied by Daihatsu with a record of 12,513 units distributed in wholesales and 11,202 units in retail. The third position is occupied by Mitsubishi with sales of 6,898 units in wholesales and 6,141 units in retail throughout January 2026.

Interestingly, based on wholesales data, BYD immediately jumped to fourth position with a distribution of 4,879 units to the dealer network. However, its retail sales were recorded at 2,516 units.

Below it, Honda ranked fifth with a wholesales figure of 4,016 units and retail of 4,233 units, as recorded by Gaikindo. Another surprise came from Jaecoo who successfully ranked ninth in the list of best-selling brands.

The brand recorded wholesales of 2,925 units and retail of 2,031 units. Jaecoo itself has recently launched the J5 EV electric car which has attracted public attention because it is priced starting at Rp. 249 million.

In a period of two months, the number of vehicle order letters (SPK) for the model is claimed to have reached tens of thousands of units. With this dynamic, the Indonesian automotive market competition in early 2026 looks increasingly tight, especially with the strengthening of the presence of Chinese brands in the midst of the long dominance of Japanese manufacturers.
