It's Best to Stop Using It, These Are the Signs of Perfume That Has Expired

JAKARTA - Perfume is one of the things that is so personal. When someone has found a perfume scent that they like, they often feel sorry to quickly finish it.

However, did you know that perfume can expire? In general, perfume can last about one to three years after exposure to air or when its composition changes.

Like other cosmetics, perfume can also expire, according to Senior Creative Director of Bvlgari Parfums, Amandine Pallez, the sign that perfume is no longer wearable is usually not just a reduced intensity, but also the changing character of the aroma.

The aroma is usually more acidic, sharp, and even metallic or plastic due to oxidation. The more oxygen that enters the perfume bottle, the greater the change in the aroma.

"Perfume does not fade in intensity, but its aroma tends to become oxidized, acidic, sometimes metallic or plastic," said Pallez, quoted from Byrdie.

Another sign that shows that perfume is expired is the change in the aroma of the top note and the color of the liquid which becomes more turbid. The liquid which was originally yellowish can turn dark brown, which indicates that the perfume has been damaged.

"If it turns brown or black, it is mainly because the perfume is oxidized," said chemist Christine Martey-Ochola.

Thus, the habit of 'saving the last drops of favorite perfume' is often useless because the aroma can be oxidized and make it no longer good to use.

The way to store perfume to last is to store it away from light and heat, keep it in its original bottle, and use it until it is used up without being moved often.

It should also be remembered that oxidized perfume can trigger a rash that can be sprayed directly on the skin. so it's best to stop using it. Therefore, if there are signs of color and aroma changes in perfume, then use it should be stopped.
