Noel Gallagher Challenges Critics Who Say He Is Not Worthy of Receiving the 2026 BRIT Awards

Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher has finally spoken out about the wave of protests that have marred his crowning as the winner of the Songwriter of the Year award at the 2026 BRIT Awards.

With his light-hearted style of speech, the 58-year-old guitarist actually challenged back those who questioned his eligibility to receive the trophy.

The controversy arose after the BRIT Awards announced Noel as the winner for a category previously won by big names such as Ed Sheeran to RAYE.

The public highlighted the fact that Noel has technically not released a new song in the last 12 months. In response, Noel admitted honestly that he was not productive writing songs lately.

"I haven't written a song for two years. I'm not sure how I can get away with this one (winning the award), but I'll accept it," Noel said in a recent interview with talkSPORT.

However, the Manchester-based musician emphasized that the parameters of a songwriter's success are not only about instant productivity, but also the economic and cultural impact produced.

According to industry data, sales of Oasis' song catalogs and his solo projects continue to dominate the market, especially after the momentum of their massive reunion tour which was a total success in 2025.

"I think the BRIT Awards are based on record sales, and I'm not sure there's any other solo songwriter who sells that much," he said. "I mean, we sold a million records last year without me having to get off the sofa. I doubt there's any other songwriter who can match that."

For those who still feel objections, Noel is not hesitant to invite them to meet on the night of the award.

"If anyone has a problem with this, meet me there. We'll settle it on the red carpet. If the whining songwriting team - which is up to 11 people for one song - wants to protest, I'll be there," Noel said.

The 2026 BRIT Awards are scheduled to take place in Noel's hometown of Manchester on February 28. This is a historic moment because for the first time in almost 50 years, the event will be held outside of London.

Noel suspects that the strong reason for his selection is also related to the location of the event. He feels that the organizers really want Oasis's representation on the Manchester stage.
