Excluded From The England National Team, Lingard Has The Opportunity To Join Again If Someone Is Injured

JAKARTA - England's national team head coach Gareth Southgate on Wednesday morning local time announced the final squad for Euro 2020. Attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard is one of six names dropped.

The four other names left out are defender Ben Godfrey, defender Ben White, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, striker Ollie Watkins, and midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

Meanwhile, Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has already resigned from the England squad due to a recurring injury.

The names left out will remain in the England squad for the two warm-up games against Austria on Wednesday local time and Romania four days later.

"We still have two warm-up games where the dropped players can be involved and if anyone is injured, they will be called up first," Southgate said.

UEFA granted waivers to teams participating in EURO 2020 to make substitutions in their squad before the first match of the group stage, in case of serious injury or sick player.

Lingard is one of the players who always featured for England at the 2018 World Cup and has recently risen in popularity again after performing well during his loan spell at West Ham United, but the Three Lions squad has a lot of talent upfront.

"For me personally, it's very difficult to speak directly to Jesse, who has done so much for England and done well for us for a long time," Southgate said.

Southgate admitted to giving Lingard, Ward-Prowse, and Watkins the option to leave the squad, but the trio decided to remain in training camp.

Two currently injured players, Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson remain in the squad and 15 of the 26 players will have the chance to make their international debuts.

Southgate says Maguire may not be fully recovered for England's opening game.

Meanwhile, Southgate selected four players who usually play at right-back, including Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, and Reece James, but they all have the ability to play in other positions.

"Yes, we have four players who usually play at right-back at their club," said Southgate.

"Basically they are our best 26 players and that's why they are in the squad and if I could pick five or six right-backs maybe I would.

"We are here to play nine games and are already facing injury threats. I am sure we will face another challenge over the next five weeks, so we need adaptability, great players, and professionals," he concluded.

Despite being held in 12 cities across Europe, England has a slight advantage for Euro 2020. Apart from the fact that their three matches in Group D will be played at Wembley, if they qualify for the round of 16 as group winners they will also play at Wembley.

Then the semifinals and finals will all be played at Wembley.

England will start their first Group D match against Croatia on June 13, before taking on Scotland on June 18 and the Czech Republic four days later.
