Chili and Crude Oil Prices Rise Ahead of Ramadan, Pramono Prepares Market Intervention

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung admitted that chili and cooking oil are still the two food commodities most prone to price increases ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.

This was conveyed by Pramono after leading the Full-time Leadership Meeting (Rapim) which discussed Jakarta's readiness to face Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2026.

According to Pramono, the DKI Provincial Government has asked related regional apparatus organizations (OPD) to focus on maintaining the stability of the prices of basic necessities so that Jakarta's inflation remains under control during Ramadan until Eid al-Fitr.

"So the usual rise is oil and chili. So these two commodities are always increasing, one of the existing inflation is oil and chili. But this time we are also preparing for it," said Pramono at the DKI Jakarta City Hall, Tuesday, February 10.

As one of the anticipated steps, the DKI Provincial Government will encourage the cultivation of chili, even though land constraints are a challenge in Jakarta.

"Including even though Jakarta's urban farming or area is limited, we will encourage activities to plant chili later," he said.

The DKI Provincial Government also ensures that monitoring of food prices and availability is carried out routinely, covering rice, meat, to 3 kilogram LPG. The early warning system or early warning system is still used to detect potential price fluctuations from the beginning.

"We will regularly monitor the availability of food prices, whether it is rice, meat, 3-kilo LPG, and we will continue to implement what the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has regarding the early warning system for prices in Jakarta," said Pramono.

In terms of supply, Pramono said Jakarta's food stocks were in a safe condition to face Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, including other religious holidays.

He also appealed to the public not to make excessive purchases, following the experience of attempts to detain supplies and boycott certain commodities at Christmas and New Year's last year.

To maintain price stability in the event of turmoil in the market, the DKI Provincial Government ensures that the cheap market program continues to be held as a form of direct intervention.

"We also agree that activities related to the cheap market to intervene if there is indeed a turmoil in the market, we agree that it can be done in Jakarta," he said.
