Anthropic's Expansion into India Is Hampered by Local Company Having Similar Name
JAKARTA - Anthropic, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) company from the United States, is facing a lawsuit as it begins its expansion into India. This is because local companies have the same name.
The company, called Anthropic Software, has been operating since 2017 in Karnataka. When Anthropic entered India, Anthropic Software felt that the company developing Claude was causing confusion among customers.
Due to this confusion, Anthropic Software filed a lawsuit. They asked for compensation of 10 million rupees or around Rp. 1.8 billion to the commercial court. In addition to money, Anthropic Software also demands the right to use the name officially.
"Currently, I am using my legal rights because this causes great confusion for my customers," said Anthropic Software Founder Mohammad Ayyaz Mulla, launching from TechCrunch on Tuesday, February 10.
The Karnataka court had issued a formal summons to Anthropic Global in late January 2026. The court refused to order a temporary cessation of operations to the company.
However, the court stated that the trial would continue on February 16. The next hearing will determine whether the two companies can maintain the name peacefully or not.
Seeing Anthropic Software wanting to keep its name, this trademark is predicted to undergo a long legal process. Until now, Anthropic, which is famous for Claude, has not commented on the case.
