Causes of Too Frequent Burping and Amount to Watch Out for
JAKARTA - Everyone generally farts about 14 times a day. However, even though farting is a natural human activity, there are also some people who experience a higher farting frequency than the average.
Quoted from Huffpost, on Monday, February 9, 2026, Dr. Satish Rao, said that fart is a physiological phenomenon that is a byproduct of the fermentation process in the large intestine.
The fermentation produces gases consisting of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen, and various other gases. These gases will later be released through two pathways, namely through breathing and farting.
"After the gas is formed, there are only two exit routes. Some of the gas will be absorbed from the wall of the large intestine into the bloodstream, then expelled through the breath," said Dr. Rao.
"However, another way is fart. The gas will eventually come out. If the amount is large and formed too quickly, the body does not have time to absorb it, so the gas is pushed out through the anus," he added.
In general, farting several times a day is not something to worry about. With farting, it indicates that the digestive system and intestinal microbiota work well and healthy.
However, there are indeed some people who produce more gas than others. This is due to habits such as chewing gum, consuming carbonated drinks, and others.
"People who often chew gum, drink carbonated drinks, or eat too fast, tend to swallow more air, which can cause flatulence," said Dr. Folasade P. May.
"Food patterns, digestive speed, to medicines, also affect how much gas is produced and released," he continued.
However, the habit of farting that needs to be watched out for when accompanied by pain, interferes with activities, or feels very different from the usual pattern. If someone farts more than 23 or 24 times a day regularly and causes complaints, then the condition is worth further examination.
"Most importantly, if excessive flatulence persists or is accompanied by pain, weight loss, diarrhea, or blood in the stool, it is best to consult a medical professional. Doctors can help trace the cause," concluded Dr. May.
