Carrick: Great Start Does Not Guarantee Permanent Job at Manchester United
JAKARTA - Michael Carrick insists an impressive start as Manchester United manager does not change his prospects of getting the job on a permanent basis.
Carrick has led the victory over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham. He then continued his positive streak by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
This increases the likelihood that the former England midfielder could get the role permanently, but Carrick says a promotion is still a long way off.
"Nothing has changed. Honestly, it wouldn't change what I do or how I feel about it."
"I think I'm fully aware of the role I'm playing here and the responsibility I have."
"We want to be successful. I want this club to be successful after the end of the season, whether it's me, whether it's someone else."
"At this stage, I can't control that. We'll see what happens," Carrick said, as reported by ESPN.
Manchester United are committed to a full recruitment process as they look to replace Ruben Amorim, who was sacked last month.
Only a minority of supporters made Carrick their first choice to be the next permanent manager when he was appointed until the end of the season, but opinions are starting to change.
However, Carrick believes that the club should not be swayed by the impact of short-term results - even if those results are good.
"Results in a short period of time do not change everything. If it has changed it, something is wrong."
"We can't overreact immediately, whether it's really good or there are some problems we need to solve. This is a steady progress."
"We know that football can change and turn quickly. So, we have to stay calm and continue to focus on what we need to do," he said.
With two games in four days against Tottenham and West Ham, Carrick has the chance to achieve five wins from five games before his side get a 12-day break for going out of the FA Cup.
"I really enjoy what I'm doing. I'm here, I feel like I'm at home here, but I fully understand the situation. So, I'm not too carried away," said Carrick.
