Urban Mobility Increases, Users of KAI Group Rail Services Reach 442 Million by 2025
JAKARTA - Urban community mobility is increasingly dense as economic and social activities increase throughout 2025.
This condition is reflected in the performance of urban rail-based transportation managed by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI Group, with a total of 442,111,779 users throughout 2025.
This number is increasing compared to 2024 which was recorded as 406,024,854 users, or an increase of around 36.08 million users.
This increase is in line with the analysis of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) which notes that the metropolitan area in Indonesia is still dominated by the productive age population with high daily travel intensity, especially towards the center of economic activities, education, and public services.
As for Jabodetabek, Bandung Raya, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan, to Palembang, they are areas with the largest commuter flows that require large-capacity and scheduled mass transportation.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, said the largest contributor to KAI Group's urban transportation came from the KAI Commuter service.
Throughout 2025, KAI Commuter served 400,737,915 users, an increase from 374,484,307 users in 2024.
In the Jabodetabek area, the Commuter Line serves 349,311,251 users, reflecting the high daily mobility of the people of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi.
Meanwhile, in West Java, the Bandung Commuter Line Area II serves 18,727,643 users, and in East Java, the Surabaya Commuter Line Area VIII recorded 16,020,323 users.
In the Special Region of Yogyakarta, the Commuter Line Area VI Yogyakarta serves 9,015,768 users along 2025.
The Prameks train service serving the Yogyakarta-Solo corridor also serves 1,113,023 users, supporting medium-distance regional mobility.
In Banten, the Rangkasbitung-Merak Commuter Line serves 4,463,446 users, connecting the western area of Banten with the sea transportation node and industrial area.
For airport connectivity, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line serves 2,346,934 users throughout 2025.
Apart from commuter services, the Jabodebek LRT also recorded significant growth by serving 28,816,787 users throughout 2025, up from 21,055,870 users in 2024.
This service strengthens the connectivity of residential areas in Bekasi, Depok, and East Jakarta with the Jakarta business center.
Connectivity to the airport is also strengthened through airport train services. Yogyakarta Airport Train serves 2,865,729 users throughout 2025, an increase from 2,730,791 users in 2024.
In the Yogyakarta and Solo Raya regions, KA BIAS recorded 769,490 users, a sharp jump compared to 192,187 users in 2024.
In North Sumatra, the Srilelawangsa KA serves 4,115,680 users throughout 2025, an increase from 3,085,294 users in 2024, as passenger mobility and daily travel in the Medan metropolitan area increase.
Meanwhile, the South Sumatra LRT in Palembang serves 4,626,481 users, up from 4,350,217 users in 2024.
Furthermore, Anne said, the growth in the number of urban transportation users is an important foundation for strengthening services in the future.
