Roblox Tightens Account Oversight to Prevent Abuse
JAKARTA - Roblox continues to push for a facial verification system to ensure the accuracy of its users' ages. This is done to address the risk of harassment and harmful content for children.
Based on the latest data shared by the platform, 45 percent of daily active users have undergone facial verification as of the end of January. This system divides users into six different age categories so that intergenerational interactions are more limited.
However, many users do not like this limitation. Not a few users try to manipulate their accounts so that they can interact with anyone, for example pretending to be an adult or vice versa.
Therefore, Roblox uses behavioral analysis technology to detect inconsistencies in age data. Roblox Senior Director of Product Policy, Eliza Jacobs, explained that how someone types can be an important clue.
"The way adults type is different from the way kids type. So (we have) a lot of systems running in the background to make sure that the age is accurate," said Roblox, quoted via TechCrunch on Monday, February 9.
In addition to typing style, the system also monitors the use of different emojis in each age group. Older users tend to use emojis as punctuation at the end of a sentence, while young people put them in the middle.
If suspicious account activity is found, Roblox will automatically launch additional checks. This is done to ensure that the account owner actually matches the age category listed.
Roblox promises to continue improving their safety features in order to respond to the ever-evolving digital threat. This innovation is expected to create a safer playing environment.
