AT&T Releases Kids-Specific Phone and Smartwatch, Galaxy A17 Equivalent Specs but More Secure

JAKARTA - AT&T officially launched a smart device for children by introducing amiGo Jr. Phone and amiGo Jr. Watch 2. This step makes AT&T the first and only operator to present a smartphone that is specifically designed for children, with a focus on security, parental control, and affordable prices.

The amiGo Jr. Phone smartphone was developed in collaboration with Samsung and carries specifications that are almost identical to the Galaxy A17. Although the design is simple and not prominent from the aesthetic side, AT&T emphasizes the main purpose of this device is to provide a safe first mobile phone experience for children, while making it easier for parents to stay connected and conduct supervision.

AT&T calls the amiGo Jr. Phone a simple and secure phone. The device is equipped with the AT&T amiGo app that parents can use to set screen time, which apps can be accessed, and various other settings. Additional features such as location sharing, Safe Zones, and usage scheduling are also available to limit distractions during school hours.

In terms of connectivity, this phone already supports 5G networks, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS, and Dual SIM. The operating system directly runs Android 16.

For screen specifications, the amiGo Jr. Phone carries a 6.7-inch panel with an FHD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. The kitchen uses the Exynos 1330 chipset, paired with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal memory that can still be expanded via a microSD card up to 1.5TB. The battery capacity reaches 5,000mAh, with a claim of charging up to 50 percent in about 30 minutes.

In the camera sector, this phone is equipped with a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a 5MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera, and a 2MP f/2.4 macro camera. The front camera has a resolution of 13MP for selfie and video calls. This device has also bagged IP54 certification for dust and splash resistance, weighing around 200 grams.

In addition to the phone, AT&T also released the amiGo Jr. Watch 2, a smartwatch designed to be more robust for children. This smartwatch comes with built-in messaging, gaming, and an SOS Alert button for emergencies. Through the amiGo app, parents can monitor their child's location, enable school mode, and set up the camera and other features.

amiGo Jr. Watch 2 has a 1.6-inch color screen with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels coated with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. This smartwatch runs Android 11 Go Edition and is powered by the Snapdragon Wear 5100 processor, with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. Uniquely, this watch is also equipped with a 5MP front camera.

For durability, this smartwatch carries a 600mAh battery, IP68 certification, and water resistance up to 5 ATM. Available sensors include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and gyroscope. In terms of connectivity, the device supports Bluetooth 5.1 and 4G LTE networks.

AT&T said the amiGo Jr. Phone and amiGo Jr. Watch 2 will be available through the official AT&T website, the myAT&T app, and AT&T retail outlets. The smartphone is priced at 209.99 US dollars or installments of 2.99 US dollars per month for 36 months with certain unlimited packages without having to switch. Meanwhile, the amiGo Jr. Watch 2 is sold for 169.99 US dollars or installments of 2.99 US dollars per month with a qualifying service package.

This launch shows AT&T's efforts to fill a niche market of child-friendly devices, amid growing parental concerns about digital security and children's use of mobile devices.
