Train Passengers Reach 442 Million by 2025, Dominated by Jabodetabek Commuter Trains

JAKARTA - The PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Group transported 442,111,779 passengers throughout 2025, reflecting the high mobility of the community as well as the role of rail transport in supporting connectivity and national economic growth.

"By 2025, the total urban transportation services of the KAI Group will serve 442,111,779 users, an increase from 406,024,854 users in 2024, or an increase of around 36,086,925 users," said KAI Corporate Communication Vice President Anne Purba, quoted by Antara, Sunday, February 8.

According to him, this trend is in line with the analysis of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2025 which notes that the metropolitan area in Indonesia is still dominated by the productive age population with high daily travel intensity, especially towards the center of economic activities, education and public services.

He said that as a rail-based transportation service managed by the KAI Group, KA is increasingly becoming part of people's daily mobility, ranging from work trips, education, economic activities, to connectivity to airports and agglomeration areas.

"The Jabodetabek, Bandung Raya, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan, and Palembang regions are recorded as the areas with the largest commuter flows, so they need large-capacity and scheduled public transportation," he said.

The largest contribution of KAI Group urban transportation throughout 2025 comes from the services managed by KAI Commuter.

Throughout the year, KAI Commuter served 400,737,915 users, an increase from 374,484,307 users in 2024.

In the Jabodetabek area, the Jabodetabek Commuter Line serves 349,311,251 users along 2025, reflecting the high daily mobility of the people of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi.

In West Java, the Commuter Line Area II Bandung serves 18,727,643 users, supporting the mobility of the people of Greater Bandung and its surroundings.

Meanwhile, in East Java, the Commuter Line Area VIII Surabaya recorded 16,020,323 users, as economic activity and daily travel in the Surabaya area and buffer cities increased.

In the Special Region of Yogyakarta and its surroundings, the Commuter Line Area VI Yogyakarta serves 9,015,768 users along 2025, becoming an important part of the daily movement of people, students and tourists.

Still in this area, the Prameks train service serving the Yogyakarta-Solo corridor also serves 1,113,023 users, supporting medium-distance regional mobility.

In Banten, the Rangkasbitung-Merak Commuter Line serves 4,463,446 users along 2025, connecting the western region of Banten with the sea transport node and industrial area.

For airport connectivity, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line serves 2,346,934 users, supporting the movement of aircraft passengers, airport workers, and business trips to and from the center of Jakarta City.

In addition to commuter services, the KAI Group also operates the Jabodebek LRT, which serves 28,816,787 users along 2025, an increase from 21,055,870 users in 2024.

This service strengthens the connectivity of residential areas in Bekasi, Depok and East Jakarta with business centers and other transportation nodes in Jakarta.

Connectivity to the airport is also strengthened through airport train services. In Yogyakarta, train services to Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) serve 2,865,729 users throughout 2025, an increase from 2,730,791 users in 2024.

"This service consists of a PSO scheme that serves the community with affordable fares and a commercial service YIA Xpress that serves direct travel with a shorter travel time," explained Anne.

In the Solo Raya and Yogyakarta regions, the BIAS train, which is an airport train that connects urban areas with Yogyakarta International Airport via existing rail lines, serves 769,490 users along 2025, a sharp increase compared to 192,187 users in 2024.

In North Sumatra, the Srilelawangsa train service serves as the main link between the center of Medan City and Kualanamu Airport, as well as serving commuter travel in the region.

Throughout 2025, the Srilelawangsa train will serve 4,115,680 users, an increase from 3,085,294 users in 2024, as passenger air mobility, airport workers, and daily travel activities in the Medan metropolitan area grow.

Meanwhile, in Palembang, the South Sumatra LRT serves 4,626,481 users throughout 2025, an increase from 4,350,217 users in 2024, and is the backbone of urban public transportation from the airport to the central area of community activities.

In Central Java, the Batara Kresna train service connecting Solo and Wonogiri regions serves 179,697 users throughout 2025, an increase from 126,188 users in 2024, supporting the mobility of the Solo Raya agglomeration area.
