KAI Strengthens Central Java Agglomeration Mobility Through Train Services
JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) strengthens community mobility in the Central Java agglomeration through the improvement of train services, to support intercity connectivity, economic activities, and daily travel convenience for passengers.
"Weekends and holidays are often moments of increased community mobility in Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region," said KAI Corporate Communication Vice President Anne Purba in a statement in Jakarta, Saturday.
He said that intercity travel, to the airport, to daily mobility in urban areas increasingly confirms the important role of rail-based public transportation.
"This trend is reflected in the performance of urban, local, and airport train services, which continue to grow throughout January 2026," said Anne.
According to him, the pattern of movement is in line with the picture of regional mobility released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2025. Central Java is recorded as one of the provinces with high intensity of inter-district/city commuter travel, especially in the Semarang-Solo-Yogyakarta-Purwokerto corridor.
Economic, educational, tourism, and public service activities that are interconnected encourage the need for scheduled, comfortable, and easily accessible travel.
In this context, Anne continued, KAI continues to strengthen urban transportation services as part of the Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region agglomeration mobility ecosystem.
Anne said the trend of increasing customers for various services showed a change in people's travel habits that increasingly rely on trains.
"Trains are now a convenient travel option for various needs, ranging from daily mobility, weekend travel, to access to airports," said Anne.
He said that intercity services within the agglomeration area also showed positive performance through the Joglosemarkerto train. In January 2026, the executive and economy class train of the New Generation served 110,409 customers, an increase from 97,929 customers in January 2025.
"The Yogyakarta-Solo-Semarang-Purwokerto ring road makes this service widely used for family travel, tourist activities, and inter-regional mobility," he said.
Connectivity to the airport is also strengthened through the BIAS train (Adi Soemarmo Airport Train). Throughout January 2026, this service served 74,102 customers, up from 63,730 customers in January 2025.
KA BIAS facilitates travel from the center of Solo City to the Caruban and Madiun areas, as well as supporting the smooth running of air travel.
In the western region of Central Java and DIY, the Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) Railway also recorded stable performance. In January 2026, this service served 239,331 customers, an increase from 229,716 customers in January 2025.
The presence of regular and Xpress services provides travel flexibility for tourists and people who travel for family and work purposes.
Daily mobility in urban areas is still supported by the Yogyakarta Area VI Commuter Line (Commuter Line Yogyakarta-Palur). Throughout January 2026, this service served 758,375 customers, an increase from 712,152 customers in January 2025.
With a frequency of 27 to 31 trips per day and serving 11 main stations, the KRL Area VI is an important link between the Yogyakarta, Klaten, and Solo Raya areas.
Local train services also complement people's movements. The Prameks train serves 94,567 customers in January 2026, an increase from 86,973 customers in January 2025, on the Yogyakarta-Kutoarjo route at affordable fares.
Meanwhile, the Batara Kresna KA Purwosari-Wonogiri (PP) serves 16,294 customers, up from 12,497 customers in the same period last year due to an increase in travel frequency.
Anne added that the increasing use of trains in Central Java reflects the role of rail-based transportation in supporting the increasingly dynamic mobility of agglomeration areas.
"The train presents a more organized, comfortable, and easily accessible journey. With interconnected services, the train becomes a relevant mobility solution for various travel needs of the community," he explained.
