PM Albanese will visit Jakarta again, sign a security treaty with Prabowo
JAKARTA - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will return to Indonesia on February 5-7, 2026 to meet President Prabowo Subianto and sign a bilateral security treaty.
According to the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, Albanese's visit was at the invitation of President Prabowo and is expected to result in a productive dialogue to increase bilateral cooperation.
"Australia's ties with Indonesia are unique and enduring as neighbors, partners and friends, committed to a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific," said Prime Minister Albanese, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, February 5.
The Australia-Indonesia Joint Security Treaty to be signed reflects the deep partnership and trust between the two countries, increasing cooperation to a higher level for mutual security.
"This treaty shows closer defense cooperation and confirms our relationship is stronger than ever," Albanese said.
In addition to regional security, the meeting of the two leaders will discuss trade, investment, education, and development.
Australia has noted an increase in the demand of the Indonesian people for Australian educational products, health services, and consumer goods, in line with Australia's economic strategy in Southeast Asia until 2040.
Indonesia has also increased investment in Australia, which is projected to have a positive impact on employment, business, and the Kangaroo State's economy.
PM Albanese will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who will meet with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono during his visit to Jakarta.
According to Foreign Minister Wong, the joint security treaty reflects the most important step in the past three decades of bilateral partnership for peace and stability in the region.
"In this moment of uncertainty, this shows the importance of our relationship and respect for each other," said Foreign Minister Wong.
This visit is the fifth official visit to Indonesia by PM Albanese. While he is abroad, Deputy PM Richard Marles will serve as PM.
