Gini Ratio of Jakarta Decreases to 0.423 as of September 2025, Inequality Still in Moderate Category
JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of DKI Jakarta Province recorded a decrease in the inequality of Jakarta residents' spending in September 2025. This decline occurred along with the improvement in the poverty rate in the capital.
Head of BPS DKI Jakarta Province Kadarmanto said that Jakarta's gini ratio in September 2025 was recorded at 0.423. This figure is down compared to March 2025 which was at the level of 0.441 or decreased by 0.018 points.
He explained that the decline in the gini ratio indicates that the spending gap between the high-income and low-income population groups is narrowing.
"This means that the gap between the spending of the upper and lower classes is getting narrower. This reduction in inequality shows that the benefits of economic growth are beginning to be more evenly distributed among all groups of people," said Kadarmanto in a press statement, Thursday, February 6.
The distribution of household expenditure also showed improvement. In September 2025, the expenditure share of the bottom 40 percent group increased to 16.97 percent. This figure increased by 0.86 percentage points compared to March 2025 which was 16.12 percent.
Even though it has improved, the inequality of Jakarta residents' spending is still in the moderate category if referring to the World Bank classification.
In line with the reduction in inequality, BPS also recorded a decrease in Jakarta's poverty rate. Jakarta's poverty rate in September 2025 was recorded at 4.03 percent. In addition to being lower than in March 2025, this figure also decreased by 0.11 percentage points compared to September 2024 which was 4.14 percent.
"The improvement of several macroeconomic indicators has led to a reduction in the number of poor people in the period March 2025 - September 2025. The number of poor people in September 2025 reached 439.12 thousand people, or decreased by 25.75 thousand people compared to March 2025," said Kadarmanto in a press statement, Thursday, February 5.
BPS revealed that the poverty rate in September 2025 was the lowest since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. However, BPS noted that the figure still has not returned to the position before the pandemic.
BPS also recorded the poverty line in DKI Jakarta in September 2025 at Rp897,768 per capita per month. This figure increased by 5.28 percent compared to March 2025 which was recorded at Rp852,768 per capita per month.
The poverty line component is still dominated by food needs. In September 2025, the contribution of the food poverty line reached 69.30 percent, while the non-food poverty line was 30.70 percent.
Kadarmanto said a number of factors also influenced the reduction in poverty and inequality rates in Jakarta. One of them is economic growth which was recorded as increasing from the first quarter to the third quarter of 2025.
In addition, household consumption also increased, accompanied by a decrease in the open unemployment rate and a relatively controlled inflation condition throughout May to September 2025.
Other factors that BPS said played a role were the expansion of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program through an increase in the number of nutrition fulfillment service units (SPPG), as well as the implementation of various social assistance programs from the central government and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.
"In general, the distribution of social assistance programs by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government during the period March-September 2025 was on time without delay," said Kadarmanto.
