Overcome the Scarcity of Specialist Doctors, the Minister of Health Promotes Hospital-Based Education

JAKARTA - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin confirmed that the government was speeding up the implementation of a hospital-based specialist education system. This step was taken to catch up with the very few specialist doctors, especially in the Outer, Frontline, and Remote areas (3T).

Important Policy Points:

Acceleration of Production: Indonesia currently only produces 2,700 specialist doctors per year, although it needs 32,000 doctors to reach the ideal figure.

Regional District Priority: This system prioritizes general practitioners from the region. They can pursue specialist education without paying a penny in tuition.

Focus on Catastrophic Diseases: The equalization of specialist doctors is urgently needed to treat critical diseases such as cancer, heart, stroke, and kidney failure.

International Standards: Education will adopt a global model, where prospective specialists get direct guidance from consultants in hospitals without high costs.

"We make this system so that the children of the region can become specialists for free. If not, it is a pity that people in the region die just because there are no specialist doctors," said the Minister of Health at the World Cancer Day commemoration, Wednesday (4/2) quoted from ANTARA.
