The issue of the Indonesian-Malaysian border sparked a debate in the Malaysian Parliament.
JAKARTA - The council session discussing the issue of the Indonesian-Malaysian border, in the Malaysian parliament, Kuala Lumpur, was colored by a debate between a number of council members and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The debate that occurred was not about substantive matters related to the Malaysia-Indonesia border, but rather about the accusation of "traitor", which according to Anwar Ibrahim was once thrown by the opposition against him through the media.
Initially, Anwar explained in detail about the issue of the Indonesian-Malaysian border. Then he emphasized that the border issue should be handled wisely and pay attention to the good relationship between the two countries.
"So that's why you have to refer to numbers and data," said Anwar as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, February 4.
Anwar then conveyed the importance of giving awards and appreciation to all Malaysian and Indonesian officers or authorities who have gone to the field to carry out the measurement of the border line, to dialogue regarding the country's borders.
Anwar believes that so far some members of the opposition group have only delivered criticism, even insulting him as a traitor to the country.
"There is a fact of insulting, barbaric. If you don't know, ask, don't curse and shout," said Anwar.
Anwar's statement triggered interruptions from a number of council members from the opposition party - even when the beginning of the session, the Chairman of the Malaysian House of Representatives Johari bin Abdul had reminded the agenda of the session to only listen to PM Anwar's explanation in one direction, and all responses will be made at the next agenda which will be scheduled.
A number of council members from the opposition party stood up and raised an interruption, because of objections to being called swearing and shouting - an accusation that was considered inappropriate to be delivered in parliament.
They emphasized that they only asked for an explanation from the Malaysian government regarding border issues, based on information previously provided by Indonesian authorities.
Responding to this, Anwar emphasized that he wanted to clarify and deny the accusations that he was a traitor to the country regarding border issues.
The session could then continue after the Speaker of the Malaysian House of Representatives asked all members to calm down.
Anwar then decided to close his explanation by expressing the hope that everything related to the interests of the country, including borders, could be conveyed wisely.
"I have no problem with how the members of the opposition council ask, but I strongly deny the accusations and slander that say I betrayed the country," Anwar said.
On that occasion, Anwar generally explained that negotiations related to the unresolved state borders, continued to be carried out by Malaysia-Indonesia by involving all related elements, from the bottom to the ranks of the country's leaders.
Anwar hopes that all parties can maintain and respect the good relations between the two countries, in expressing views on border issues.
"We can have different opinions, but don't impose punishment and don't offend our colleagues in Indonesia, who are trying to establish a very good and close relationship between the two countries," said Anwar.
