Golkar rejects the threshold of the abolished Parliament: It is an instrument to simplify multi-party
JAKARTA - Golkar Party Secretary General M Sarmuji rejected the proposal to remove the parliamentary threshold (Parliamentary Threshold). According to him, the Parliamentary Threshold is a constitutional and democratic instrument to support the simplification of the party system in Indonesia.
"Yes, it is an instrument for us to move towards a simple multi-party system. The simple multi-party system is the most compatible with the presidential government system," said Sarmuji at the DPR building, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday, February 4.
The Chairman of the Golkar Faction of the DPR emphasized that the presidential system of government had been enshrined as a trust in the Basic Law (UUD).
"So whatever instruments can be applied to move towards a simple multi-party system, Golkar will definitely agree," said Sarmuji.
Regarding the threshold for parliament, Sarmuji said Golkar was waiting for discussions with other factions in the DPR. Most importantly, he said, the threshold rules for parliament must remain in place.
"Yes, the number can be discussed later, the number can be discussed how much can be agreed upon together," he said.
"But most importantly we must realize that the parliamentary threshold is one of the instruments to move towards a simple multi-party system," added Sarmuji.
