DKI Provincial Government Continues Weather Modification Today, Semai Awan Tiga Sorti

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has carried out weather modification operations (OMC) again today as part of the steps to anticipate extreme weather and hydrometeorological disasters. This operation targets areas around Jakarta.

The implementation of OMC was carried out by the DKI Jakarta Provincial BPBD through three flights using the CASA 212-200 TNI Air Force A-2105 aircraft based at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base. This activity involves cross-agency coordination, ranging from BMKG to the Air Force.

"This operation is the result of synergy between the DKI Jakarta Provincial BPBD with BMKG, TNI AU, and related ministries and agencies," said the Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial BPBD, Isnawa Adji, in his statement, Tuesday, February 3.

In the first sorti carried out in the morning, cloud seeding targeted the Bogor Regency area. The target clouds seeded include Stratocumulus, Stratus, and Cumulus humilis types at an altitude of 7,000 to 8,000 feet. In this flight, 800 kilograms of Calcium Oxide (CaO) seeding material were used.

The second sorting was carried out during the day with the sowing location in the Sunda Strait area. The sowing was carried out at an altitude of 9,100 to 9,400 feet using 800 kilograms of sodium chloride (NaCl). This step is aimed at diverting potential rain into the water area.

Meanwhile, the third sorti was carried out in the afternoon in the Lebak area, Banten Province. Cloud seeding targeted the Stratocumulus and Cumulus humilis types with cloud tops below 7,000 feet. In this sorti, calcium oxide (CaO) seeding material was used again with a total of 800 kilograms.

Isnawa explained that OMC is a proactive step to reduce the impact of high-intensity rain that has the potential to cause puddles and flooding in Jakarta.

"This weather modification operation is part of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government's ongoing mitigation efforts in dealing with extreme weather dynamics. Cloud seeding is carried out based on analysis of atmospheric conditions and intensive weather monitoring, so that the potential for rain can be directed to safer areas and does not burden DKI Jakarta," he said.

The DKI Jakarta BPBD, continued Isnawa, continues to conduct daily evaluations and strengthen cross-agency coordination so that the implementation of OMC runs according to the current weather conditions.

"The DKI Jakarta Provincial BPBD appeals to the public to remain vigilant against the potential for moderate to heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning, thunder, and strong winds. The public is also expected to play an active role in maintaining environmental cleanliness and water channels to minimize the risk of flooding and flooding," he added.
