Celebrate Chinese New Year 2026, Jakarta Will Be Decorated with Lanterns to Hold a Festival 

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has begun to make a number of preparations to welcome the celebration of the 2026 Chinese New Year. DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said that this year's series of activities will be held in various locations involving buildings in Jakarta.

Pramono said that coordination between the central government and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government had been carried out since last week. From the meeting, a number of agendas for the Chinese New Year celebration were agreed upon.

"We have held a meeting together to welcome this Chinese New Year. Several activities have been agreed, including (the Chinese New Year festival) at Lapangan Banteng," said Pramono in Central Jakarta, Tuesday, February 3.

In addition to the main festival, the Chinese New Year celebration will also be enlivened with cultural activities in a number of areas. Pramono said there would be a Cap Go Meh celebration in Glodok and a barongsai attraction in the main corridor such as Jalan Sudirman to MH Thamrin.

The preparations for the Chinese New Year celebration, said Pramono, can also be seen from the installation of lanterns and typical Chinese New Year decorations in a number of office buildings and business areas. starting to be installed at several points.

"Including later if you look at it starting now, there are several buildings that have lamp posts and so on, especially in SCBD and so on," said Pramono. "We are trying to make the public, building owners, contribute to the Jakarta lantern festival. Now there are 93 buildings that will join," he added.

According to Pramono, the concept of celebrating Chinese New Year this year will be made more festive and colorful, similar to the atmosphere of Christmas and New Year celebrations previously. He said the massive installation of lanterns was a new thing for Jakarta.

The series of Chinese New Year celebrations held by the DKI Provincial Government is scheduled to take place until February 17, 2026. After that, the DKI Provincial Government will shift the atmosphere of the city to welcome Ramadan.

"Because on the 18th they have started fasting, the atmosphere will be totally changed by welcoming the fasting until Eid al-Fitr," said Pramono.

Pramono added that in the period from Ramadan to Eid al-Fitr, the DKI Provincial Government will again provide tax incentives for shopping centers that provide discounts to the public. This policy is expected to encourage economic activity in Jakarta.
