Natural Renovation, Climbing Route to Mount Dempo South Sumatra Closed until March 25
JAKARTA - The Dempo Mount Merapi Registration Office (BRIGADE) is rejuvenating the natural ecosystem, by closing the climbing route to the top of the Dempo mountain in South Sumatra (Sumsel) until March 25, 2026.
The Secretary of BRIGADE, Desta Ndruru, said that his party together with KPH X Dempo had issued a notification letter numbered 500.4.6.10/152/Dishut.KPH-X/2025 which was issued on December 19, 2025 and addressed to all prospective climbers of Mount Dempo.
The letter contains information about the closure of climbing to Mount Dempo which starts from January 15 to March 25, 2026, or approximately two months.
"The temporary closure of the Dempo Mountain climb is carried out based on several important considerations, including the closure is carried out with the aim of restoring the Dempo Mountain ecosystem or rejuvenation," he said when confirmed from Palembang, Tuesday, quoted by Antara.
He added that the closure was also related to the holy month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, and the closure was made considering the weather conditions which could potentially have strong winds and heavy rain.
During the closure period, there should be no climbing activities to Mount Dempo. If someone still dares to climb during the closure period, they will be sanctioned by being blacklisted from climbing Mount Dempo.
In addition, he said, activities at the Brigade Post will also be closed, but will still be monitored occasionally to ensure that there is no climbing. He also appealed to climbers to comply with all regulations that have been made.
"In any form, you should not climb, before there is an opening letter from the KPH, so you are advised to prospective climbers and open trips to wait for the opening schedule. Because the climbing route is being renovated and repaired," he said.
