MUI has not supported Indonesia to join the Board of Peace, waiting for the President's explanation
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has not expressed support for Indonesia's participation in the Board of Peace. Deputy Chairman of the MUI, Muhammad Cholil Nafis, emphasized that his party came to the Palace to hear directly the President's reasons before deciding on an official stance.
"The main theme is about the Board of Peace. We want to hear an explanation from the President why Indonesia joined," said Cholil at the Presidential Palace complex, Tuesday, February 3.
He said that MUI already had a principled attitude, but the organization's decision would be discussed in a meeting.
The principle in question relates to the rejection of colonialism and support for Palestinian independence. "In the Constitution, we have a mandate to reject all forms of colonialism. We are pro-Palestinian independence," he said.
Cholil emphasized that the official stance had not been announced. "We will have a meeting first. We will announce the MUI's decision later. We will listen first," he said.
He said MUI wanted to ensure that Indonesia's steps were in line with these principles before taking a position.
