Nurul Arifin Appreciates Government Efforts in Limiting Children's Digital Access
JAKARTA - The government is preparing to implement restrictions on the use of gadgets for minors as it prepares to implement Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of the Implementation of the Electronic System or PP TUNAS, which will limit access to the internet and social media for children under 16 years of age in the near future.
Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the Golkar Party Faction, Nurul Arifin, expressed his support for the policy. He assessed PP TUNAS as an important step for the country in responding to the increasingly rapid development of the digital world, especially in protecting children from the negative impacts of social media.
According to Nurul, so far the digital space tends to develop without balanced regulation, while children are the most vulnerable group. Therefore, the presence of the state through PP TUNAS is considered a form of responsibility that cannot be delayed.
"This is not about prohibiting children from getting to know technology, but about ensuring that they enter the digital space at the right time and with sufficient protection," Nurul said in a statement, Tuesday, February 3.
He assessed that restricting access to social media and the internet for children under 16 years of age was a reasonable approach. Children can still learn and get to know technology, but with stages that are adjusted to their age and mental readiness.
Nurul also highlighted the responsibility of digital platforms regulated in the PP TUNAS. According to him, this rule is a reminder that the operator of an electronic system cannot only pursue user growth and profits, but must also protect its users, especially children.
"Until now, global platforms have been too comfortable. With this rule, they are encouraged to be more serious about age verification, security, and circulating content," he said.
Regarding the implementation plan, which is carried out gradually, Nurul considers the government's step of preparing a transition period as a natural thing. He hopes that the technical rules prepared can be well understood by the public and digital industry players.
From the DPR side, Nurul ensured support for the implementation of the PP TUNAS. He also said that the possibility of strengthening the rules to the level of law remained open if in the future a stronger legal umbrella was needed.
Nurul also reminded that this rule will not be effective without the role of parents and the surrounding environment. Support at home and at school remains the key to ensuring that children are truly protected in the digital world.
With this policy, Nurul assessed that Indonesia is beginning to take a more active position in regulating social media. Not only protecting the younger generation in the country, but also participating in giving direction in discussing digital space governance at the global level.
