These iPhone Camera Accessories Make Optical Zoom Reach 12x, There's a Light, SD Slot, to a Professional Grip

JAKARTA - Camera accessory innovations for smartphones are back. This time, a special iPhone photography kit made by RetroVa has stolen the spotlight for being able to provide optical zoom capabilities up to 12x, complete with a camera grip, additional lights, and a memory card slot.

A number of Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo have experimented with external camera modules first. However, RetroVa is one of the first to take the concept seriously into the iPhone ecosystem.

This photography kit is designed for the iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, as well as the iPhone 17 Pro lineup. In fact, RetroVa signals that support for future iPhone models is also being prepared. This product is aimed at iPhone users who are satisfied with their phones, but feel limited by the zoom capabilities of the built-in camera.

Two versions of the iPhone camera kit

RetroVa presents two main variants. The basic version is a combination of a camera case and grip that makes the iPhone feel like a professional camera. This grip is equipped with a two-stage shutter button, zoom button, control dial, and several additional buttons that can be programmed to adjust ISO, exposure, and other settings.

The goal is not just convenience, but to provide a more serious and controlled shooting experience, similar to the use of a dedicated camera.

Meanwhile, the more expensive package adds an external 2.35x telephoto lens that can be attached with a threaded system. When combined with the iPhone 17 Pro's 4x telephoto camera, this combination produces an equivalent focal length of around 235 mm or the equivalent of 10x optical zoom. On the iPhone 16 Pro which has a 5x telephoto camera, the result can even reach 12x optical zoom.

RetroVa promises much cleaner image quality than digital zoom, making it suitable for shooting wildlife, sports, and long-distance events.

microSD slot and ProRes

One of the most interesting features is the presence of a microSD card slot. This feature allows creators to record ProRes videos directly to an external memory card, a practical solution for users who are often constrained by internal storage capacity.

RetroVa also provides a companion app with full manual control and a retro-themed interface. Although the grip has an internal battery, its capacity is only used to turn on the physical controls, not as a power bank for the iPhone.

This project was launched via Kickstarter at the end of January 2026 and has exceeded the funding target quite quickly. Product delivery is scheduled to take place between March and April 2026, depending on the package chosen.

As a crowdfunding product, there are certainly risks involved. However, for iPhone users who want further zoom and more professional camera controls without having to buy a new phone or a separate camera, this RetroVa photography kit is an interesting experiment to watch.
