After High Inflation, Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra Turn to Deflation in January 2026

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported deflation in three provinces, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra in January 2026.

This condition occurred after the three of them had recorded high inflation in December 2025 due to hydrometeorological disasters.

BPS Distribution and Services Statistics Deputy Ateng Hartono said that the three provinces affected by the disaster experienced a reversal of the trend from inflation to deflation in January 2026.

"Post-disaster inflation in the three provinces affected by hydrometeorological disasters, Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra, experienced deflation in January 2026 after previously experiencing high inflation in December 2025," he said in a press conference, Monday, February 2.

According to Ateng, West Sumatra recorded the deepest deflation compared to Aceh and North Sumatra, even greater than the national deflation rate.

In detail, West Sumatra experienced deflation of 1.15 percent in January 2026, after recording an inflation of 1.48 percent in December 2025.

Meanwhile, North Sumatra experienced deflation of 0.75 percent after previously experiencing inflation of 1.66 percent.

Meanwhile, Aceh recorded deflation of 0.15 percent, after experiencing quite high inflation of 3.60 percent in December 2025.

Ateng explained that in general, the food, beverage, and tobacco groups were the main contributors to deflation in the three provinces.

"Like Aceh, which is mainly driven by a decline in broiler eggs, while in North Sumatra and West Sumatra it is mainly driven by a decline in the price of red chilies," he concluded.

Meanwhile, nationally, BPS recorded deflation of 0.15 percent on a monthly basis (mtm) in January 2026, after December 2025 recorded inflation of 0.64 percent.
