Erdogan to Discuss US Threat to Iran in Cabinet Meeting
JAKARTA - The possibility of the US launching an attack on Iran will be discussed in a Turkish cabinet meeting led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday.
As reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, the news portal Axios reported that Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar were reportedly trying to arrange a meeting between US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and senior Iranian officials in Ankara next week.
Turkey has no further information on the news, a source in the Turkish government told RIA Novosti.
"The cabinet meeting will discuss the US threat against Iran, as well as the latest developments in the region. Turkey's stance against military intervention and support for diplomacy and dialogue will be reiterated," the source said.
In this context, the ministers will also discuss the results of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's visit to Istanbul last weekend, his talks with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and President Erdogan, as well as Erdogan's phone call with the US President and the Iranian President, according to sources.
In January, US President Donald Trump said a "big armada" was heading to Iran. However, he admitted that he hoped Iran would be willing to negotiate and sign an agreement, including one related to the total abandonment of nuclear weapons.
Trump warned that if an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program is not reached, any future US attack on Iran will be "much worse" than previous attacks.
