Not Necessarily Effective, Chery is Not Tempted to Follow the 10-Year Warranty Trend for Consumers
JAKARTA - Chery Australia considers extending the warranty period to 10 years does not necessarily have a significant impact on increasing consumer confidence. This attitude is different from a number of rivals such as MG Motor, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors which now offer a warranty of up to a decade.
In the Australian market itself, the average manufacturer still provides a five-year warranty without an unlimited kilometer, as applied by major brands such as Toyota, Ford Motor Company, and Mazda. Meanwhile, Chery has already presented a seven-year warranty without a distance limit, equivalent to Kia, GWM, Skoda, and KGM.
Chery Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris said that the current warranty scheme is ideal for consumers. This is in line with the pattern of vehicle ownership in the Kangaroo Country.
"I think the reality is that the average car ownership in Australia today is about seven or eight years," Harris said, as reported by Drive, Monday, February 2.
"I think extending the warranty to 10 years will not help increase confidence further," he continued.
Harris emphasized that Chery's seven-year warranty is unconditional and does not bind consumers to carry out maintenance at the official network. This Chinese manufacturer does not want to bind consumers.
"We already have the industry's leading seven-year warranty without conditions, so you don't have to do service at our place. We really want you [to work with Chery, but] you don't have to, we won't force you," he said.
"You don't have to pay any extra fees to get it, you're not limited by distance. It's just a simple warranty," said Harris.
For comparison, the 10-year warranty from MG, Nissan, and Mitsubishi is generally accompanied by special provisions. Consumers are required to carry out routine service at authorized dealers or workshops so that the warranty period can be extended.
If the maintenance is carried out at an independent workshop, the additional warranty rights are automatically voided. When asked if Chery plans to increase the warranty offer in the future, Harris did not rule out the possibility, although he emphasized that it was not a priority.
"I wouldn't rule it out. However, it's definitely not something we're actively considering," he concluded.
