Weather Modification Since January 30 Reduces 28 Percent of Rainfall in Jakarta

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government claims that the implementation of weather modification operations (OMC) since January 30 has contributed to reducing rainfall in Jakarta and its surroundings. Based on a temporary evaluation, this effort is considered capable of reducing rainfall intensity by around 28 percent as part of flood risk mitigation measures.

Head of the DKI Jakarta BPBD, Isnawa Adji, said the decrease in rainfall was observed from the results of evaluating rainfall data during the implementation of the OMC in the last few days.

"Based on the results of the evaluation of rainfall data, the implementation of the Weather Modification Operation from January 30 to today is indicated to be able to reduce rainfall by 23.85 percent. This effort is part of the anticipatory steps of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government in reducing the risk of flooding and puddles," said Isnawa in his statement, Monday, February 2.

On Sunday, February 1, 2026, the DKI BPBD will carry out OMC again through four flights using the Casa 212-200 A-2105 aircraft belonging to the Indonesian Air Force. The operation is focused on areas that have the potential to become locations for the growth of rain clouds, both in waters and on land.

The first and second batches were carried out in the Sunda Strait area with 800 kilograms of NaCl seeding at an altitude of 10,000-11,000 feet and 8,000-10,000 feet.

The third batch was directed to the Bogor Regency area with the planting of CaO of 800 kilograms at an altitude of 7,000-8,000 feet. Meanwhile, the fourth batch was carried out again in the Sunda Strait with NaCl planting material of 800 kilograms.

"With the addition of these four sorties, the total number of OMC flights since January 30 to February 1, 2026 has reached nine sorties," said Isnawa.

BPBD DKI recorded a total of planting materials that have been used so far consists of NaCl as much as 4,000 kilograms and CaO as much as 3,200 kilograms, with an accumulated flight time of 13 hours 10 minutes.

From the results of monitoring rainfall until 17.00 WIB, the highest rainfall recorded in the DKI Jakarta area reached 13.2 millimeters or fell into the category of light rain. The highest intensity occurred in the West Jakarta area.

"As a follow-up, on Monday, February 2, 2026, the DKI Jakarta Provincial BPBD is planning to carry out four sorties of weather modification operations which will start at 07.00 WIB, while still paying attention to weather conditions and field evaluation results," said Isnawa.

BPBD DKI ensures coordination with BMKG, TNI AU, and related agencies continues to be carried out to adjust the implementation of OMC to the developing atmospheric dynamics. The public is also asked to remain vigilant against the potential for moderate to heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning, thunder, and strong winds, as well as to maintain environmental cleanliness and water channels to minimize the risk of flooding.
