Germany Condemns Iran's Retaliation by Naming EU Military as Terrorists

Germany has condemned Iran's decision to designate the armed forces of the European Union (EU) countries as terrorist organizations.

Iran took the step after the European Union labeled the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) a terrorist organization.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Sunday (1/2) assessed that Iran's retaliatory action would not change Germany's stance on the EU's decision regarding the IRGC, according to a DPA International report.

Previously, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament stated that the armed forces of European countries were considered "terrorist organizations" under Iranian law and warned the European Union that it would bear the consequences.

Wadephul assessed that Iran's response was unfounded and politically motivated, and called the designation of the IRGC by the European Union a timely step that had long been overdue because the IRGC was considered to have suppressed peaceful protests, executed the opposition, and exported terrorism.

"Those who suppress peaceful protests, execute the opposition, and spread terror to Europe cannot divert criticism with political maneuvers," said Wadephul.

He also reiterated Germany's political support for the Iranian people who want a "better life."

Previously, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas said EU foreign ministers agreed to add the IRGC to the list of terrorist organizations, stressing that repression in Iran "cannot be left unanswered."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen backed the deal, calling it a "long overdue" step.
