Android 16 Breaks 7.5 Percent, Android 15 Becomes the Most Used Version
Jakarta - Android 15 is now the most popular version of the Android operating system globally with a market share of 19.3 percent. Meanwhile, Android 16 has recorded a rapid adoption and has been used by 7.5 percent of devices. This was revealed by Google's latest Android distribution data as of December 2025.
Based on reports quoted from 9to5Google, Android 14 followed in second place with a share of 17.2 percent, followed by Android 13 (13.9 percent) and Android 11 (13.7 percent). This data reflects the increasingly diverse Android ecosystem amid the acceleration of software updates by manufacturers.
Android 16, which is the latest version, shows significant growth despite being relatively new. The acceleration of adoption is driven by a faster distribution of updates, not only on Google Pixel devices, but also from partners such as Samsung which began rolling out Android 16-based One UI 8 since September 2025. Other manufacturers such as Oppo, OnePlus, and Nothing then followed in the second half of 2025.
Meanwhile, the older Android version still has a large user base. Android 12 is recorded to be used by 11.4 percent of devices, Android 10 by 7.8 percent, and Android 9 (Pie) by 4.5 percent. This condition shows that many users are still sticking to old devices that no longer receive the latest system updates.
On the other hand, Android 4.4 KitKat officially left the distribution list because its user share has been below the 0.1 percent threshold, marking the end of one of Android's legendary versions.
For app developers, this distribution data is an important reference in determining application compatibility and feature priorities, given that almost a fifth of Android users are now using Android 15. Google assesses this trend shows an increase in efficiency in distributing Android updates to users around the world.
