Reservoirs in Jakarta are Now Designed for Extreme Rainfall

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Water Resources Office (SDA) is now designing a reservoir or pond that can hold water during extreme rainfall or even above 150 mm per day, one of which is the Kebagusan Pond in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta.

"Now, our infrastructure is designed with rainfall above 200 mm per day. This Embung (Kebagusan) is designed with a rainfall intensity of 221 mm per day," said Head of the DKI Jakarta Water Resources Office Ika Agustin Ningrum as reported by ANTARA, Friday, January 30.

Embung Kebagusan which is located on Jalan Baung, Kebagusan Village, Pasar Minggu District has a total area of around two hectares.

The Embung was built to reduce flood discharge in the Joe connecting channel flow system (Mampang-Krukut River system) with a reduction of about 2.3 percent.

The water discharge in the channel flow system connecting Kali Mampang and Krukut before there was a reservoir or Embung Kebagusan, namely around 30.07 cubic meters per second. However, after there was an embankment, the discharge could be reduced to 29.38 meters per second.

"The concept, before the flow flows at the meeting of the Krukut River and the Mampang River, on top or in the front, we catch it first (at the Kebagusan Embung). Hopefully, by the time it reaches the Mampang River, there will be a decrease," explained Ika.

That way, the puddles or flooding in the Pegangsaan Dua area, which is the location of flooding due to the overflow of the Joe Connection Channel, can be handled.

Ika said Embung Kebagusan is one of seven embung and reservoirs that are being built by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. Currently, the total embung in Jakarta is 50 embung.

"In addition to 50 plus seven, there are approximately 93," said Ika.

Embung or reservoirs are built to temporarily hold water during floods. This step is an effort to overcome flooding by adding water absorption areas.

"So, in addition to building polders, increasing river capacity, we also make water reservoirs in the form of blue open spaces," said Ika.

In the future, he ensured that other dams/embunnings would continue to be built as part of the integrated flood control strategy in DKI Jakarta.
