Doctor Reveals the Dangers of Frequently Holding Small Intestines for the Kidneys and Bladder

JAKARTA - Many people are used to holding back urination, whether on long trips, in class, or when taking exams. The feeling of discomfort is often considered the only impact. In fact, the consequences can be much more serious. Therefore, going to the toilet on time is important to maintain bladder and kidney health.

The following is an explanation of the effects of delaying urination on the body, based on the information from Dr. P. Vamsi Krishna, Clinical Director and Senior Consultant and Head of Urology, Robotic Surgery, Laparoscopy, and Endourology at CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, as reported by the Hindustan Times website.

1. Increased Risk of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Many people think holding back urine only causes a full feeling in the bladder. In fact, this habit can increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTI).

"People who often delay going to the toilet have a higher risk of developing UTI. Women are more vulnerable, but men are not immune," said Dr. Vamsi Krishna.

Naturally, urine needs to be excreted regularly. If it is left in the bladder for too long, bacteria have more time to multiply. This is what triggers infection.

Common symptoms of UTI include burning sensation when urinating, fever, and pain in the lower abdomen.

2. Giving Excessive Pressure on the Kidneys

If holding urine becomes a habit, kidney health can also be affected. Doctors explain that this habit can trigger a condition called vesicoureteral reflux, which is the flow of urine that turns back to the kidneys.

This condition puts additional pressure on the kidneys and, in the long run, has the potential to cause damage. Although it is rare, regular check-ups every few months are recommended to ensure there are no disturbances in the urinary tract.

3. Drinking Less Worsens the Situation

The problem often increases when people also deliberately reduce drinking so as not to go back and forth to the toilet. This often happens to students during exams.

"Drinking less makes urine more concentrated. Urine that is too concentrated can irritate the bladder and increase the risk of kidney stones," said Dr. Vamsi Krishna.

4. Increases Mental Stress and Disturbs Concentration

Holding in urine is not just a physical matter. A full bladder constantly sends signals to the brain, creating low-level stress and an uncomfortable feeling that interferes with focus.

As a result, thinking and concentration abilities can decrease. In fact, by taking a moment to go to the toilet, alertness and productivity can increase, which is very important especially for students when taking exams.
