Opposition figure Maria Corina soon returns to Venezuela, to follow political transition
JAKARTA - Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado announced her intention to return to Venezuela soon to participate in the political transition and "the construction of a new country."
"Soon, I will return to Venezuela to work on the transition and development of this incredible country, where our children will return," Machado said in a post on X, as reported by Sputnik, Thursday, January 29.
In the video, he stated that the country was experiencing "a critical moment" and that the liberation of Venezuela would have an impact on the entire Western Hemisphere.
Machado noted that the transition to democracy was supported by "major democratic countries around the world," specifically naming the governments of US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Machado also called the release of political prisoners a priority, saying more than 700 people were still being held in the country for political reasons.
On January 3, the US launched a massive attack on Venezuela, arresting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and bringing them to New York.
Trump announced that Maduro and Flores would be tried for allegedly being involved in "narcoterrorism" and posing a threat, including to the US.
During their appearance in a New York court, Maduro and Flores pleaded not guilty to the charges.
