Not Just About Kilometers, This is the Right Time to Change Engine Oil
JAKARTA - There are still many drivers who delay changing oil because they rely solely on estimates. In fact, oil is the main shield of the engine from excessive heat and friction between components.
Over time, lubricants will undergo oxidation, evaporation, and be contaminated by combustion residues. When the quality decreases, the protection of the engine also weakens.
Seeing this condition, Pertamina Lubricants shares practical guidelines so that riders can recognize when the oil needs to be replaced as well as tips to maintain engine performance optimally. Generally, motorcycle oil is recommended to be replaced every 2,000-3,000 kilometers, while the car is in the range of 5,000-15,000 kilometers.
However, these numbers are not an absolute benchmark for changing oil. There are many other factors that affect the life of oil, ranging from the type of lubricant (mineral, semi-synthetic, to full synthetic), fuel quality, driving habits, to the consistency of periodic service.
"The time interval for changing oil does not only depend on the mileage, but also on the ability of lubricants to face the load from vehicle engines with extreme road conditions such as dust and congestion," said Senior Analyst PCO & Specialties PT Pertamina Lubricants Mulianto, in an official statement, Wednesday, January 28.
"Full synthetic oils generally have better durability than mineral types. Therefore, it is important for drivers to understand the characteristics of the oil used so that they can adjust the replacement schedule more accurately," he continued.
In addition to seeing the odometer, drivers can also pay attention to a number of signals from the vehicle. Starting from the engine sounds rougher, because the thin lubricating layer increases the friction between components.
Then the acceleration is weakened, because the movement of the piston and valve is less smooth, the gas response slows down. As a result, the vehicle's power feels reduced, especially when stuck or uphill.
Finally, when the lubricant is no longer optimal, the engine is forced to work harder to produce the same power. The combustion efficiency also decreases, making fuel consumption increase or become more wasteful.
To encourage more disciplined vehicle maintenance habits, Pertamina Lubricants presents the Payday and Easy Cuan Day promo throughout January to December 2026. This cashback program can be enjoyed at more than 2,000 partner workshops throughout Indonesia.
