Germany issues travel warning to US after Minneapolis shooting
Germany warns travelers to be alert and increase caution following the fatal shooting of a US citizen by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis.
"In Minneapolis and other cities, demonstrations sometimes lead to violent clashes with immigration and security authorities. Keep up with information through local media. Be aware and avoid crowds where violence could potentially occur," the German Foreign Ministry said on its official website.
"Stay calm and follow the instructions from the authorities and local security forces," the ministry added.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Monday (26/1) expressed concern over the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minnesota.
"I consider the news we have received from the US in recent days to be worrying. And of course it always happens in one region or one affected city," Merz said while speaking in Hamburg.
"I assume the American authorities will now really explain whether the shooting was necessary, whether there was really a threat to the officers involved. Obviously, I have to say I find the level of use of violence in the US worrying, if I may say so," he added.
A 37-year-old man was shot and killed on Saturday in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the second fatal shooting by federal agents in the city in the past month.
The US government described the shooting as an act of self-defense by the officers, but video footage from the scene posted online showed a different picture.
