Svitolina Bungkam Gauff to the Australian Open 2026 Semifinal

JAKARTA - Elina Svitolina took less than an hour to eliminate third-seeded Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Australian Open Grand Slam.

The Ukrainian tennis player needed 59 minutes to extend his winning streak to 10 matches with a final score of 6-1 and 6-2 at Melbourne Park, Victoria, Australia, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

This is Svitolina's fourth Grand Slam semifinal in her career and her first at the Australian Open. She will next face a tough test when she meets world number one and top seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Sabalenka tried to keep her dream of winning her third Grand Slam title in Australia by eliminating the 18-year-old American, Iva Jovic, in an easy two-set match 6-3 and 6-0.

Svitolina previously ended the 2025 competition season early in September to recover and recharge her energy. As a result, the 31-year-old immediately performed brilliantly after returning.

He claimed his 19th career title in Auckland earlier in the year and carved out the third-longest winning streak on the tour level in his career after defeating Gauff.

The longest win in his career was in 2017 (15 consecutive matches) and the second one was in 2025 (11 consecutive matches).

Svitolina has only lost one set in 2026 when playing against Sonay Kartal in the Auckland quarterfinal. At that time he was 3-5 behind Kartal in the third set before finally winning 6-4, 6-7 (2), and 7-6 (5).

The latest victory makes Svitolina certain to return to the top 10 of the WTA for the first time since October 2021.

The victory over Gauff was Svitolina's 24th career win against a player from the top five rankings. Four of them were won at Grand Slam tournaments, all of which she has won since returning from maternity leave.
