M5.7 Pacitan Earthquake Felt to DIY, Bali, and NTB
YOGYAKARTA - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude (M) 5.7 magnitude shook the Pacitan area, East Java, on Tuesday, January 27 morning. The earthquake tremors were reported to be widespread to a number of areas in Central Java, the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), and even reached some areas of Bali and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
Based on official data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred at 08.20.44 WIB. The epicenter of the earthquake is located at coordinates 8.18 degrees South latitude and 111.33 East longitude. The epicenter is on land, about 24 kilometers southeast of Pacitan with a depth of 122 kilometers.
Director of Gempabumi and Tsunami BMKG, Dr. Daryono, explained that based on its depth, this shock is classified as a medium-sized earthquake. This is due to the activity of rock deformation within the plate (intraslab). Analysis of the source mechanism shows an upward movement or thrust fault.
"By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred is a type of medium-sized earthquake due to the presence of rock deformation activity in the plate," said Daryono in a written statement, Tuesday afternoon.
BMKG recorded the intensity of the earthquake felt in various regions with varying scales:
MMI Scale III-IV: Pacitan, Karangkates, and Tulungagung (felt by many people in the house). MMI Scale III: Malang, Nganjuk, Ponorogo, and Blitar (real vibration in the house, feels like a truck passing). MMI Scale II: Yogyakarta, Bantul, Sleman, Kulon Progo, Purworejo, Semarang, Pasuruan, and Mataram (felt by some people, light objects that are hung are swaying).Although the scope of the tremor is quite wide, BMKG ensures that this earthquake is safe from the threat of tidal waves. "The results of the modeling show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," said Daryono.
Until 08.35 WIB, the BMKG's monitoring had not detected any aftershock activity. In addition, there have been no official reports of building damage or casualties due to this event.
The public is urged to remain calm and not be swayed by irresponsible issues. Make sure the information you receive comes from the official BMKG channel or related government agencies.
