US Immigration Officer Surrounded by Crowd in Minneapolis
JAKARTA - Several US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers were attacked at a restaurant in Minneapolis.
"Several ICE and CBP officers who were not on duty were going to dinner in Minneapolis, but then their personal data and location were spread and the restaurant was visited by the crowd," US Vice President JD Vance wrote on X, Monday, January 26, reported by ANTARA.
Vance said officers were locked inside the restaurant, and local police declined to respond to their requests for help (because they were directed by local authorities).
"Other federal law enforcement officers eventually came to assist ICE and CBP personnel," he added.
Vance described the incident as "just a small part of what's going on in Minneapolis," as local authorities refused to cooperate with immigration services, he added.
"They have created chaos so that such incidents can occur, where someone dies tragically and politicians can boast about border enforcement crimes," Vance said.
He also expressed hope that the Minneapolis authorities would "stop this madness."
Mass protests continue in Minneapolis, Minnesota, following the killing of several people during an ICE raid.
Heavy equipment has been deployed to the streets, and protesters have set up barricades.
Earlier this month, an ICE officer shot a woman who authorities say tried to ram an agent with a car during a protest in Minneapolis.
The officer suffered internal bleeding in his body after the incident, CBS News reported on January 14, citing US officials.
On his inauguration as the 47th president, US President Donald Trump promised to immediately stop illegal immigration and start mass deportations from the United States. He also declared a national emergency to address the US border crisis.
