PBSI: Progress of Young Players Seen at Indonesia Masters 2026
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) is pleased to see the positive progress of young players in the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters 2026 event which just ended last weekend.
Indonesia managed to close the journey as hosts with one title and one runner-up on Sunday, January 25, 2026. The two representatives who managed to reach the final round were also young players.
To the PBSI Coaching and Achievement Division, Eng Hian, said that the results obtained at Istora were certainly not the best, but the journey of young players to the final match showed that there was an increasing progress.
"If for the overall evaluation, what we can say is that we see the progress of these young players has been much more visible, yes."
"First, from the round they can go through, how far they can go. Second, how their performance on the field compares to last year. We can see the progress," he said.
The only title to save the hosts' face was brought home by the men's singles badminton player Alwi Farhan. The 20-year-old athlete climbed to the highest podium after defeating Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul from Thailand.
Meanwhile, one runner-up was obtained by the pair of Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin. The pair failed to grab the second BWF Super 500 title in their careers due to losing against Nur Izzuddin/Goh Sze Fei.
One title is enough to treat Indonesia's failure last year on the same stage. At that time, the two representatives who entered the final, all of whom were senior players, failed to present the title.
"For the senior players, we certainly expect better results. Especially we hope that these senior players, such as Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, are at the Super 750 and 1000 level," said Eng Hian.
The result at Istora was Alwi's first title in the BWF Super 500 level event. The 2023 junior world champion made his debut for that level at the Indonesia Masters last year, but immediately lost in the qualifiers.
The journey at Istora is the second final for Raymond/Nikolaus in the same level tournament. They previously made it to the final of the Australian Open last year and came out as champions.
