Alwi Farhan considers Indra Wijaya to be like a father

JAKARTA - Alwi Farhan admitted that his relationship with his coach, men's singles player Indra Wijaya, was like father and son after he emerged as the champion of the 2026 Daihatsu Indonesia Masters.

The 20-year-old shuttler climbed to the highest podium at Istora on Sunday, January 25, 2026, after defeating Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul from Thailand with a landslide score of 21-5 and 21-6.

Alwi said that Indra Wijaya played an important role in his career journey until he could bring home the title of champion in front of his own public.

"I've actually met Koh Indra more recently than I've met my parents because my parents are in Solo," Alwi said in a press conference after the match.

The title brought home from Istora Senayan, Jakarta, was Alwi's first title in the BWF Super 500 level event and also treated his failure last year who immediately went home in the qualifying round.

Alwi made his debut at the Super 500 level tournament at the Indonesia Masters last year. He then went down again in several tournaments with the same level after that, but his best journey was the semifinals.

The only semifinal last year in the category tournament he stepped on when he fell in the Korea Open. At that time he suffered a loss against his senior Jonatan Christie.

"For the short-term target, of course, it is aimed from now on to be able to play in the Olympics and, yes, hopefully the peak of performance will be in the Olympics later," said Alwi.

Alwi is the only Indonesian representative who managed to bring home the title from the 2026 Daihatsu Indonesia Masters, as well as making up for the failure of the host in the previous year who failed to place a representative on the highest podium.

Besides Alwi, the final ticket was actually won by Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin, but they had to come out as runners-up after losing to the Malaysian pair, Nur Izzuddin/Goh Sze Fei.
