US Air Force to Begin Exercises in Middle East
JAKARTA - The United States Air Force announced on Sunday that it would begin multi-day readiness exercises across the Middle East "to demonstrate the ability to deploy, disperse and sustain combat air forces" in the region, amid rising tensions with Iran.
"This exercise strengthens peace through strength by deploying a credible, combat-ready, and responsible presence designed to deter aggression, reduce the risk of miscalculation, and reassure partners," said a statement released by the US Central Command (AFCENT), reported Al Arabiya (26/1).
Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated after a brutal crackdown on nationwide protests that left thousands dead and tens of thousands arrested.
US President Donald Trump has threatened military action if Iran continues to kill peaceful protesters or carries out mass executions of those it detains.
The exercise comes as the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and accompanying warships are moving toward the region. President Trump said the ships were moved "just in case" he decided to take action.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command said on social media that its Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets are now present in the Middle East, noting that the fighter jets "increase combat readiness and promote regional security and stability."
