Soroti Ancaman Pesisir, Menteri Kebudayaan Siapkan Candi Jabung Jadi Ekosistem Budaya

PROBOLINGGO - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon highlighted the threat to the coastal environment of Jabung Temple while directly reviewing the Majapahit heritage site in Probolinggo, Sunday (25/1). He emphasized that revitalization is not enough, sustainable management must be carried out immediately so that the site is not damaged by natural factors or human activities.

"The location is on the coastal area. The sea breeze with salt content is a serious challenge for preservation," said Fadli Zon at the temple complex with an area of about 5 hectares which has been arranged by the XI East Java Regional Cultural Preservation Agency.

The Jabung Temple was recorded to have stood in 1276 Saka or 1354 AD, during the reign of King Hayam Wuruk, and was mentioned in the Negarakrtagama manuscript. The red brick building is different from other East Javanese temples, which are generally andesite rocks. This structure is also considered to reflect the Hindu-Buddhist acculturation as well as the Lingga-Yoni symbol.

Head of the BPK Region XI Endah Budi Heryani said that the arrangement of the area would begin in 2024-2025 and be followed by a development phase. Village and district governments are involved in the utilization of the area.

Fadli emphasized that utilization must be in line with protection. The area is encouraged to become a cultural pocket through festivals, art activities, to local traditions. Integration with creative economy and typical culinary Probolinggo is also prepared so that the area is alive and has an economic impact.

According to him, without integrated management, revitalization risks stopping at physical projects. "Temples must live as cultural spaces, not just photo objects," he said.

This visit was also attended by regional officials and the Ministry of Culture. The central and regional governments are asked to strengthen collaboration so that the historical value of the Jabung Temple is maintained and productive for the community.
