Denmark Prepares Troops in Greenland, Faces Possible US Attack
Denmark - Last week, Danish forces were ordered to be on alert with active ammunition to face a possible US attack on Greenland, according to a report by the Danish public broadcaster, DR.
According to the report, the order was issued up to a week ago. In the worst-case scenario, the Danish army was asked to bring live ammunition to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, based on information from central political sources.
As reported by ANTARA, Friday, January 23, DR reported that the readiness lasted until US President Donald Trump abandoned the use of force against Greenland, following his meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday.
The report also mentions a large support among Danish politicians to fight if there is an attack by the US, not only from the government, but also from a large number of opposition parties.
Trump showed interest in Greenland because of its strategic location in the Arctic region, its wealth of mineral resources, and concerns about Russia's and China's growing influence in the region.
The Danish government and Greenland authorities have repeatedly rejected proposals to sell the territory, stressing Denmark's sovereignty over the island.
After meeting with Rutte, Trump said a framework for a possible deal on Greenland and the wider Arctic region had been agreed.
He also withdrew the threat of imposing tariffs on European countries that oppose the acquisition efforts.
