Trump's Gaza Peace Council Must Continue to Be Monitored
JAKARTA - Middle East observer from the University of Indonesia Muhammad Syaroni Rofii assessed that the Board of Peace (BoP) formed by US President Donald Trump needs to be closely monitored so as not to deviate from the principles of resolving the Palestinian conflict in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations (UN).
"Of course, the Peace Council must continue to be monitored, when it is contrary to the UN recommendations on the Palestinian issue. Considering that the UN, despite having a weak side, to this day is still the hope of many countries in the world," said Syaroni as quoted by ANTARA.
He said that in the short term, the Gaza Peace Council was judged to be more focused on efforts to execute Trump's ideas to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through an economic approach, especially through infrastructure development.
"The goal is to keep the Hamas group out of government affairs. Meanwhile, for Palestinian independence, it is not Trump's top priority," he said.
Syaroni said the involvement of a number of countries, including Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Indonesia, could be a temporary guarantee that the Council would not turn into an international business or real estate project.
"These Muslim countries have influence in the region, so their existence can be expected to be a distributor of Palestinian aspirations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)," he said.
According to him, the involvement of these countries is also important to prevent the Gaza Peace Council from being used for certain interests, including the interests of President Trump or other global actors, which could potentially override the rights of the Palestinian people.
In order to prevent the entry of certain business interests, the parties are considered to need to establish clear boundaries from the beginning of the formation of the Gaza Peace Council.
The BoP is an international body initiated by US President Donald Trump to oversee the administration, stabilization, and reconstruction of Gaza in the post-conflict transition period.
President Prabowo Subianto was one of the world leaders who signed the Board of Peace Charter in the 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF) series in Davos, Switzerland, Thursday (22/1).
After the signing, President Prabowo assessed the presence of BoP as an important momentum for global peace efforts.
